Singer and songwriter, STORM, has been dubbed one of SA’s brightest rising stars. Though only 18 years of age, this seasoned professional has already shared the stage with superstars such as Locnville, Euphonik, Vin Deysel, Blackbyrd and Mean Mr Mustard, just to name a few. He is currently working on his new album, which is being produced by none other than Dale Schnettler, drummer for Prime Circle.
We got a chance to chat with the star this #YouthMonth.
Q: Storm, thank you for joining us at Prompt Side. We are so happy to have this opportunity to chat with you, especially since this is a special month for South African Youth. In a nutshell, who is Storm Harrison?
Thanks, I’m happy to be here. I am just a young South African guy living his dream.
Q: You’ve been blowing up the charts in South Africa. When did this love for music begin?
Ever since I can remember music has been in my blood. The first CD I owned was a Nickelback album at the age of 2!
Q: How did it all happen? When did you feel like you finally got your big break and how long did it take for you to get there?
I suppose it was the right song with the right producer at the right time. Keep Calm broke on all major commercial radio stations, which I recorded with the top South African Music Producer, Alexis Faku.
Q: Were there any obstacles that you faced while trying to break into the South African music scene?
You have no idea the number of obstacles a musician faces in this country- it’s really tough.
Q: How would define your personal brand? How do you resonate with your audience?
My brand has transformed from the 17 year old pop star, to the 18 year old contemporary rock star. I’m still young, but I’m proud to say that in a relatively short time span, my music has evolved with me as a person, into a more mature sound. When you stay true to this natural progression that is when your fans will progress with you.
Q: Do you think there is a market for young artists in South Africa? Why?
Most definitely, without a doubt. We are the future.
Q: How would you characterize your music? Where do you draw your inspiration from?
My original love for music was contemporary rock from the very beginning. I draw my inspiration from life and human interaction.
Q: What would you say has been the highlight of your career thus far?
Wow, in these few years there have been so many, it’s very hard to pin point one. However there is something huge on the horizon which will be revealed within a week or so J
Q: What does it take for a young artist hoping to pursue a career in music in South Africa?
Hard work, dedication, commitment to your craft, and a little bit of faith.
Q: What are you currently working on? What can fans expect in the near future?
I am currently hard at work in studio working on my album with Dale Schnettler from Prime Circle.
Q: Who would you love to collaborate with and why?
The script, Coldplay, One Republic, Adam Levine, Chainsmokers, Shawn Mendes and Selena Gomez. They are who I want to be.
Q: Since its Youth Month, do you think that you have any influence over the Youth of South Africa and how so?
I would hope that I would be a positive influence as I try to live life with integrity, honour, respect and giving back to society. Most importantly, no matter who you are or what you’ve achieved, always remain humble. This is how I would hope to influence the youth of today.
Q: What would you like to say to your fans, especially South African youth and those aspiring to follow in your steps musically?
Never give up on your dreams, the world is your oyster and don’t let anyone tell you differently. Always believe in yourself.
Keep Up With Storm:
