She’s bold, blonde and an absolute beauty, and is one of the newest members of the Top Billing family on SABC 3.
She saved and bought her first car at the age of 17, paid for her own Lasik eye surgery at the age of 20 and became a Miss South Africa finalist at the age of 21. She’s now 23 and works on South Africa’s longest running Entertainment and Lifestyle TV show. These are just some of the successes that were met with an all-out effort and culminated a character that’s equipped and ready to take on the world.
Prompt Side got to chat to the presenter to find out more!
Hi Jade! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hmmm…I am a very passionate person and have a lot of interests. I enjoy being active and doing anything outdoors! I love singing, acting, presenting, dogs and hanging out with my close friends.
It’s been about 7 months since we found out that you would be the new Top Billing presenter. How has the process been so far?
It still doesn’t feel real. Every time I shoot, I think to myself, this is exactly what I want to be doing! It’s the best feeling in the world. So it has been such a blessing. It’s an exciting journey because you are constantly learning new things, seeing new places and meeting such interesting people.
There definitely has been challenges too though. I think that we are our own worst critics, and so I do get frustrated with myself because I have such a long way to go in terms of the presenter I want to be and so I need to learn to be patient with myself. You also have people spreading rumors and trying to make you look bad but that’s life and in every industry. It’s just on a bigger scale now so you have to keep proving yourself.
What were some of your aspirations while growing up, and did you think that one day you would be working on such an esteemed show, alongside legendary industry professionals?
I didn’t know where I belonged. I couldn’t box myself in. I had too many passions and interests. An office job didn’t fulfill all my passions and didn’t allow me time to pursue my passions on the side. That is why Top Billing or acting was my dream job because neither boxed you in. With acting, you are able to play different characters and each character has an interest/hobby within a movie which they do and Top Billing…well… Top Billing is adventurous, diverse, inquisitive and versatile. I am really passionate about so many things in this world and this job would allow me to experience and share other people’s passions with them and with the country. I couldn’t think of a job better suited for me, a job that would allow me to do everything I love for a living. It was literally my personality designed into a job and I dreamed of doing it with every fibre in my body.
I never ever thought it was a possibility and that’s why I joked about it, saying it was my personality in a job. I didn’t think you could actually become a presenter on the show, it seemed like another world away. Then it literally happened, I felt like I couldn’t stand when I heard my name being called out to be the next Top Billing Presenter.
Apart from the glitz and glamour that come with the job, being a presenter on one of South Africa’s most prestigious TV shows must come with hours of hard work. How do you manage your professional life with your personal life?
That’s a tough one. I’ve learnt to survive on very little sleep so I can do more in a day. Occasionally I have to overlap the two even though it’s sometime best to keep the two separate. It really is important to make time to be with your loved ones so I sometimes bring my friends or mother to events with me or see them after work, if I am in Cape Town. You also become very selective with what you do and who you choose to spend time with because your time is limited but I’ve noticed that many people with corporate jobs do the same. I’m still figuring out where to find down time, but I will get there.
Winning the Presenter Search on 3 must be one of the best moments of your life. But, what are some of your ultimate highlights on Top Billing so far?
TRAVELING! And staying in beautiful places! Meeting celebrities! Fly boarding in Zanzibar, Snowboarding and my trip with DJ Naves and DJ Sphectacular.
How do you keep motivated each day?
It’s my passion and the enjoyment I get from so many things that keeps me moving.
If you were given R10 million today, what would be the first thing you would do with it?
Take my mom on the best trip ever and spoil her is the very first thing I would do.
Do you have any role models or people you look up to?
My mother and people in general who are caring, selfless and try to be the better person. People who don’t humiliate others and treat others with kindness. A TV presenter I look up to is Ellen DeGeneres.
For most people who aspire to get into entertainment and showbiz, landing a spot as a presenter on Top Billing may be the ideal career goal. Where do you see yourself professionally in the next 10 years?
I would love to be a successful TV personality, have acted in an A grade film, maybe release a few singles and have shares in at least one successful company.
