Date: 15, 17 & 19 March 2016 | Venue: Artscape Opera House, Cape Town.
Richard Strauss scandalously opulent 1905 setting of Oscar Wilde`s play has lost none of its power to shock and seduce. CTO Artistic Director Matthew Wild opens the 2016 season with a spectacular new production, with striking designs by Conor Murphy (designer of Wild`s acclaimed 2015 West Side Story), Michael Mitchell and Kobus Rossouw.
South African conductor Gerard Korsten returns from Europe to lead the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra through Strauss` virtuosic score, with British dramatic soprano Allison Oakes starring as the depraved teenage princess who demands the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. American tenor Allan Glassman makes his CTO debut as her lecherous stepfather Herod, with local favourites Violina Anguelov and Lukhanyo Moyake appearing as Herodias and Narraboth.
